About Tapio Measurement Technologies

What we do

Tapio has worked on paper and board quality variation since the 1980s. The questions have stayed much the same: which part of the machine puts this variation into the sheet, and is this roll good enough to ship? What has changed is how precisely they can be answered.

• Tapio RQP Live is a handheld profiler that measures the hardness profile of a finished roll across its full width. Mills use it for paper and board, converters and film producers for plastic film and foil.
• Tapio Analyzers are laboratory instruments that measure basis weight, caliper, gloss, ash, transmission and other properties at the same point of the sheet, at a millimeter-scale sampling step.
• In the Tapio Analysis service we measure MD rolls and CD strips sent to our laboratory and report what the variation is, at which wavelengths it occurs and which machine element or process stage it points to.
• PapEye measures print mottling, graininess, banding, line quality and dirt specks from flatbed scanner images.

How we work

We are independent. Tapio has no ties to paper machine suppliers or QCS vendors. When an analysis points at a roll, an actuator or a scanner, it says so.

Our software is open. Tapio RollView and Tapio Analysis are free and open source, and their code is on GitHub. Analysis customers can have their measurement data and open it in the same software we use, so the data is never locked into a format only we can read.

We compare against history. New measurements are read against Tapio's archive of more than two thousand earlier measurements, so a report can say not only which of your samples is different but whether any of them is unusual for paper or board of that weight.

We work with researchers. Tapio has provided Aalto University with a Tapio Analyzer for research on how thickness variation builds up in a roll and excites winder vibration, and student theses done with us have studied, for example, predicting basis weight from transmission and caliper. The current Tapio Analyzer was renewed in an EU co-funded project.
