Measurement for paper, board, film & foil
Measure the roll. Find the cause. Fix the process.
Roll hardness profilers for the production floor, high-resolution laboratory analyzers and an analysis service that works from your own samples. We show where quality variation comes from, before it turns into downtime or a customer complaint.

Where variation hides
Four places quality problems start, and the tool that finds each one
Online scanners are built for process control: their diagonal path and large measurement spot smooth out short-wavelength variation. Tapio measures true MD and CD profiles at millimetre resolution, where the problem actually shows up.

Root-cause analysis from your samples
Send MD rolls or CD strips. We measure them at high resolution and trace the variation to the process or machine element behind it.

Average hardness could not find the bad rolls. CV% could.
Converter rejects were traced back to certain rolls, but the mill had no way to spot them before shipment: mean hardness was practically the same for every roll in the set.
- Measurement
- Continuous RQP Live hardness profiles of every customer roll at the rewinder, combined in Tapio RollView.
- Finding
- The edge rolls had clearly higher hardness variation. CV% matched the rejected rolls; the mean did not.
- Action
- A CV% alert limit of 5 %, based on earlier rejects, now flags problem rolls before they leave the mill.

In their words
Tapio Analysis is our primary tool to measure and find sources of quality variations that other measuring systems cannot detect. The results show precise machine elements to be fixed or serviced and therefore reduce guessing during production. Tapio Analysis is our primary diagnostics support tool.
If you want to understand the real CD profiles of paper and identify the source of variation, Tapio roll hardness measurements are extremely valuable. They reveal systematic process variations that are difficult or impossible to detect with online scanners.
The scanner–autofeed-software combination has worked extremely well in measuring mottling. It is definitely the smartest way to carry out measurements, since there’s no need to open the scanner and change the sample after every sheet, whether you’re dealing with single sheets or 20 sheets.
